Microplastics and PermafrostCurrently, at the Dr. Miquel Gonzalez-Meler Isotope lab at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), were working on discovering microplastics (MP) within permafrost samples collected in 2016 and are on track to resample in 2022 for radiocarbon and microbial analysis to understand the rates of carbon accumulation and the connection to microplastics.

Northwest Passage ProjectDuring the summer of 2019, a team of scientist and a mix of graduate and undergraduate students from 5 minority serving institutions set out on an innovated 18-day expedition through the Northwest Passage to understand the impacts and changing ecosystem response to climate change.

Midewin National Tallgrass PrairieDuring October of 2020, we set out to understand the effects of prairie ecosystems transformations into agricultural and pasture use has impacted the soil carbon content in field sites located at Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie, in Joliet Illinois.
